Distribution Transformer Buying Guide: 10 Specifications Every Purchaser Should Confirm

Why a complete specification matters

A distribution transformer may operate for decades, but a small error in the purchase specification can create persistent voltage problems, protection mismatch, excessive losses or installation delays. Price comparisons are meaningful only when every supplier is quoting the same electrical duty, accessories, tests and delivery scope.

Before issuing an RFQ, purchasers should confirm the following ten items.

1. Rated power

State the required kVA or MVA rating and any expected load growth. Identify continuous, cyclic and emergency loading requirements rather than relying only on the present peak demand.

2. Primary and secondary voltage

Provide nominal voltages, the highest system voltage where relevant, and the expected operating range. Confirm whether the transformer is step-down or step-up and whether it will be connected to a utility grid, generator, renewable plant or industrial bus.

3. Frequency and phase

Specify 50 Hz or 60 Hz and single-phase or three-phase service. Frequency affects the magnetic design and cannot be treated as a label change.

4. Vector group and neutral arrangement

The vector group determines phase displacement and winding connection. Also state whether the low-voltage or high-voltage neutral must be brought out and how the system will be grounded.

5. Percentage impedance

Transformer impedance influences voltage regulation and short-circuit current. It must coordinate with parallel transformers, switchgear ratings and the protection study. For parallel operation, ratio, impedance, vector group and tap position require careful matching.

6. Tap range and tap changer

Confirm the required adjustment range, step size and whether an off-circuit tap switch or on-load tap changer is needed. The choice depends on how often voltage must be adjusted and whether supply can be interrupted.

7. Insulation level

State the system insulation requirements, including lightning impulse withstand where applicable. Site altitude and pollution conditions can affect external clearances and bushing selection.

8. Cooling and temperature rise

Identify oil-immersed or dry-type construction, cooling method and allowable temperature rise. Ambient temperature, enclosure, ventilation and installation altitude must be included in the design basis.

9. Losses, efficiency and noise

Ask suppliers to declare no-load loss, load loss at the reference temperature, total loss and sound level. Evaluation based on lifecycle energy cost can produce a different decision from evaluation based only on purchase price.

10. Accessories, tests and documentation

List required indicators, pressure devices, protection relays, current transformers, marshalling box, cable boxes, terminals, wheels and monitoring interfaces. Define routine tests, any requested type or special tests, drawing approval, test reports, manuals, packing and spare parts.

Build an RFQ that suppliers can answer

Include the single-line diagram, data sheet, applicable standards, service conditions, dimensional limits, terminal orientation, delivery destination and commercial scope. Clearly distinguish mandatory requirements from preferences.

Electric Valley supplies power and distribution transformer solutions and supports international customers with engineering coordination, inspection and logistics. A complete RFQ enables Baoding Weifan Electrical Technology Co., Ltd. to provide a more accurate technical and commercial proposal.
